Graze for Biodiversity on the Sagebrush Steppe - CD

Sometimes one of the reasons we hesitate to try something new, is that we don't feel like we have all the information we need, and we don't really have much time to spend digging it up. This CD is an effort to solve some of that problem by bringing together information from wildlife biologists and animal behaviorists in a way that will help you begin thinking about livestock as an alternative to machinery, fire or herbicide for improving sage grouse habitat and to create landscapes that are healthy for producers, livestock and wildlife.

Included on the CD:

  • Videos: two short videos summarizing a case study using sheep to reduce sagebrush and increase grasses and forbs, and of my own work using cows to manage weeds.
  • What Sage Grouse Need: articles from the most respected sources, and current management plans to help you understand what sage grouse need and how some managers hope to provide that to them.
  • Understanding Animal Behavior: Summaries based on results of studies done by researchers in this fields along with articles and fact sheets from those same sources if you'd like additional reading.
  • Working With Animals: My suggestions for how you can combine animal behavior and an understanding of what sage grouse need to make changes to your management and your landscapes.
  • Monitoring Tips: A PDF file on Repeat Photo Monitoring, an easy technique for monitoring your progress.
